Surf Bali: Indonesia

August 13, 2007 By: Jennifer Category: Surfing Areas

Sanur beach, Sanur, Dempasar Selatan, Dempasar, Bali, Indonesia July, 2005 - public domain

Bali is one of over 13,000 islands in the Indonesian archipelago and is located just over 2 kilometres from the eastern tip of the island of Java and west of the island of Lombok. The island home of approximately 4 million people is approximately 144 kilometres from east to west and 80 kilometres north to south.

Tabanan Rice PaddiesThe islands varied landscape of hills and mountains, rugged coastlines and sandy beaches, lush rice terraces and barren volcanic hillsides provide a picturesque backdrop to the colourful and deeply spiritual culture of this ‘Island of The Gods’.

Warm waters, crowds, cheap living and reliable sets keeps Bali near the top of world surfing destinations. The southern coast, namely Kuta and the around Nusa Dua are the primary draws. Beginners will find the gentler, sandy areas of Kuta to be ideal for learning. You’ll find surf instructors lounging around the beach; a one hour lesson including board rental from a beach teacher will cost you around $10 USD or less. The teaching done by these local beach teachers is very questionable. From a real surf shop, the price may be $45 USD/hr. Check the sites for prices of packages.

Surf Costa Rica: Tamarindo

August 08, 2007 By: Jennifer Category: Surfing Areas

Playa Tamarindo, Santa Cruz, Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Tamarindo, located on the Pacific Coast, is a popular vacation destination in Costa Rica. Tamarindo is surrounded by national parks to its north and south, and mountains to its east.

The beach is a long stretch of white sand and warm blue water. The town stretches along the beach and shops and restaurants are within a short distance.

Tamarindo is known as a surf town with ideal conditions for surfing and windsurfing.Leatherback Turtles come at night to lay their eggs in the northern part of the bay.

Once a sleepy fishing town it has quickly grew up after being featured in the cult favorite movie about surfing called Endless Summer. Since then surfers from around the world have visited and now some move there. While it has many surf breaks and schools for learning how to surf, it is also considered a “jumping off” point to the other nearby surf locations. The number of tourist visiting is rapidly increasing and new housing is rapidly being built. Many people hold that Tamarindo has lost its authenticity as it has become one of the more overrun and relatively developed costal towns in Costa Rica. Many travellers now avoid Tamarindo for this reason, referring to the town as TamaGringo.

The population numbers are impossible to verify as they rise and fall dramatically as the seasons change from high to low. While a famous town, it is probably smaller than most think.

Nearby Beaches

To the north of Tamarindo is Playa Grande. There are two ways to reach Playa Grande: swim across the Tamarindo River or drive far inland to cross the river and continue to Playa Grande on a dirt road.

To the south of Tamarindo are the beaches Playa Langosta, Playa Avellanas, and Playa Negra. Playa Negra was featured in Bruce Brown’s Endless Summer II. Access to Playa Avellanas and Playa Negra is difficult, due to poor road conditions, especially during the rainy season.

Getting in and getting around Tamarindo

It is recommended to fly into Liberia (city in Costa Rica) international airport and take a Taxi from there which lasts a little over 45 minutes. Most airlines fly to Liberia from Houston, Miami, Atlanta or Los Angeles. In addition, the bus ride from San Jose takes about 6 hours, costs $5 dollars, and is comfortable (as of 2006 the bus leaves at 11.30am). Tamarindo also has an airport which is approximately a 45 minute flight from San Jose.

The town is nice and small, a sort of miniature tropical paradise. You can find taxis, rent cars, or scooters.

Things to see and do in Tamarindo

Numerous lagoons in the area are filled with wonderful wildlife. Incredible sunsets and sunrises on beautiful beaches add to the overall experience. Rainforests are just a short ride away, as well as volcanoes and other aspects of nature unique to this region of Costa Rica.

Tamarindo has become a mecca for surfers and blue water sport fishermen, with a sport fishing fleet of talented and conservation oriented captains who are the pioneers of the Pacific coast. Their record catches of marlin, sailfish, giant tuna and other species have become legendary. Whether you want deep bluewater fishing, or reef or shoreline fishing, the fleet can accommodate you. Surf casting and handlining in front of your villa for snook and jack are also popular. Any way you do it you can be sure to have your fresh catch cooked up for you at one of the friendly beachfront restaurants.

  • Tamarindo Surf School and Surf Camp, Learn how to surf.

Warm water surfing is enjoyed year ’round and families find this area offers opportunities for surfers of all skill levels to enjoy the great waves that bless this part of the coast. Tamarindo was the first stop on an epic worldwide surf journey in the popular movie Endless Summer II. Be aware that the beaches are very crowded with amatuer surfers these days. It can be hard to catch waves without running into another tourist. The crowds do start to thin out as evening approaches though.

Visitors also can choose to scuba dive, snorkel, go on beach cruises, water ski, jet ski, go ocean and river kayaking, wind surfing, sailing cruises and horseback riding. Bicycles, beach gear, surfboards, boogie boards and equipment of all types are available for rental from specialty stores.

In addition, there are only a few places in the world where the Giant Leatherback Turtle comes to lay her eggs, and National Park Las Baulas is one of them. A short ride from Tamarindo, watching this beautiful part of nature is a once in a lifetime event.

What to eat and drink in Tamarindo

Tamarindo is proud to offer an amazing selection of fine international and typical Costa Rican restaurants. Tamarindo has a French and German bakery, as well as restaurants catering to health-conscious and vegetarian patrons. One will never tire of sampling the wonderful variations of uniquely prepared specialties featuring the abundant supply of fresh local seafood, fruits and vegetables. Most restaurants face the beach, so while waiting for food, one can play in the sand or admire the beautiful sunset.

Tamarindo also has grocery stores, fresh produce and fruit juice stands, and internet cafes.

To quench your thirst, any tropical drink is recommended. Fresh papaya, mango, pineapple, and bananas are Tamarindo’s specialty.  (http://wikitravel.org/en/Tamarindo)

Surf South Africa: Muizenberg

August 07, 2007 By: Jennifer Category: Surfing Areas

Muizenberg is a beach-side suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. It is situated where the shore of the Cape Peninsula curves round to the east on the False Bay coast. It is considered to be the birthplace of surfing in South Africa and it is home to the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences.

In terms of history, the village has several special features, including Het Posthuys (the Post House), Rhodes’ Cottage and the site of the Battle of Muizenberg.

Rhodes’ Cottage is a small house on the seafront that Cecil John Rhodes bought as a holiday cottage and this was where he died in 1902. The house is preserved as a museum dedicated to Rhodes’ life and is open to the public.

Het Posthuys is one of the oldest buildings in South Africa, dating to circa 1742. It was built by the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Ost-Indische Compagne or VOC) as a toll-house to levy a tax on farmers passing by to sell their produce to ships lying in Simon’s Bay. One of the early postholders was Sergeant Muys (probably meaning “mouse”), from whom Muizenberg (formerly Muysenbergh and probably Muys Zijn Bergh (Mouse, his mountain) before that) gets its name. After a varied career as a police station, stables, brothel, hotel and private house the building was identified for what it was in the 1980’s and restored with funds from Anglo American Corporation. The house is cared for by the Muizenberg Historical Conservation Society and contains a small collection of photos and items of interest relating to early days in Muizenberg. It is open to the public.

The Battle of Muizenberg was a small but significant military affair that began in June 1795 and ended three months later with the (first) British occupation of the Cape. Thus began the period (briefly interrupted from 1804 to 1806) of British control of the Cape, and subsequently much of Southern Africa. The historical remnant of the Battle of Muizenberg is a site on the hillside overlooking False Bay that holds the remains of a defensive fort started by the Dutch in 1795 and expanded by the British from 1796 onwards.

Muizenberg has a fine, long beach that in effect stretches all the way round the top of False Bay to the Strand, a distance of over 20 km. False Bay, known for its population of White Sharks, also has a shark watch service that operates from Muizenberg, signalling alerts when sharks come in proximity of bathers and surfers. Above Muizenberg there is a line of steep cliffs that is very popular as a venue for rock climbing. However, certain parts of the cliff are off-limits to climbers when birds nest on the ledges.

Muizenberg houses one of the False Bay College campuses in the Cinnabar Building, a high-rise office tower. The college, a Public Further Education and Training Institution (FET), was established in September 2002 when the South Peninsula College (established 1970) and the Westlake College (established 1954) were merged.  (“Muizenberg.” Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia. 9 Jun 2007, 08:58 UTC. Surf South Africa: Durban

August 07, 2007 By: Jennifer Category: Surfing Areas

Anstey Beach, Bluff, Durban - GNU Free Documentation License

Durban is the second most populous city in South Africa, forming part of the eThekwini metropolitan municipality. It is the largest city in KwaZulu-Natal and is famous as the busiest port in Africa. It is also a major centre of tourism due to the city’s warm subtropical climate and beaches.

According to the 2001 Census, the city has a population of 3.2 million.  Durban’s land area of 2,292 square kilometres (884.9 sq mi) is comparatively larger than other South African cities, resulting in a comparatively lower population density of 1,460 inhabitants per square kilometre (3,781.4/sq mi).

Today, Durban is the busiest container port in Africa, the world’s 9th busiest port, and a popular tourist destination. The Golden Mile, developed as a welcoming tourist destination in the 1970s, as well as Durban at large, provide ample tourist attractions, particularly for people on holiday from Johannesburg. It lost its international holiday pre-eminence to Cape Town in the 1990s, but remains more popular among domestic tourists.  (“Durban.” Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia. 5 Aug 2007, 07:34 UTC.
